Caesar Achellam.

8:46 AM

This morning I woke up at 7:50 to my friend Brianna letting out an "OH MY GOSH". Rolling over, I see her on her bunk bed, face glued to her macbook, she says this: "Caesar Achellam was just captured". We made rounds in the Roadie House greeted with hugs and excited "SHUT UP'S" by anyone crazy enough to be awake. Whatever sleep I had left in me, was no longer important. THIS IS HUGE. Let me give you context to my early morning delight.

Before we came out on the road, we made goals. What was the #1 goal? To see the capture and removal of Joseph Kony and his top commanders from the battlefield in 2012. This has been the goal and the mission of Invisible Children all along, only now it had a date. We spoke this everyday, tenaciously believed in it, faced crowds of people all over the nation daily and encouraged them to have the same hope we did. But I have to admit, there were moments when I lost that hope. Moments where I wondered if the hundreds of letters we were writing and the phone calls we were making would really make any traction in DC and whether that traction would actually lead to direct results on the ground? Whether the international consciousness we were able to bring would really result in any capture?

Caesar Achellam, Joseph Kony's top commander was captured in Central African Republic, and better yet, captured alive. Take a minute and breathe in the victory. What is important to know about the LRA is that Joseph Kony's only support comes from his top commanders, the rest of his army are forced to fight in a meaningless war, many of them started out as children and were abducted at a young age. The capture of a commander means a giant shift in the strength of the LRA. Joseph Kony's top commanders besides Achellam are Okot Odhiambo and Dominic Ongwen, both of whom are indicted by the International Criminal Court. Caesar Achellam was responsible for the Mokombo Christmas Massacres in 2008. What does capture mean? It means justice and freedom to those directly under Achellam's command. It means massive information released that could lead to Kony's arrest. What else it means, I am unsure but it is only May and we're already seeing undeniable progress.

The Roadie House is buzzing, full of jumping and tears. Because regardless of whether or not we contributed to this or not, this is our dream and today a huge part of that came to fruition.
